In this 6-weeks advanced course you can aquire detailed insights into the ecology and physiology of environmentally relevant microorganisms. Our morning lectures will give you an overview on the vast diversity of microorganisms, the multitude of energy metabolisms microbes can perform in nature, and how both issues go hand in hand and drive biogeochemical cycles on Earth. During the day, you will have the opportunity to work with your supervisor on currently relevant research topics using tools from molecular biology and analytical chemistry. Our projects commonly start with field trips to Lake Constance and deal with microorganisms that are either involved in the production or mitigation of greenhouse gases in freshwater environments. During the course, you will also have the opportunity to attend invited talks from researchers of other universities, discuss recently published research results, and visit a company or research institution that deals with aquatic microbiology.
