Metagenome sequencing of the Lake Constance (Bodensee) picoplankton

We got an opportunity to welcome Dr. Jeff Hoffman, J. Craig Venter Institute, as our guest at Lake Constance. We collected filtrates of the picoplankton of Lake Constance at four different depth (1m, 9m, 17m, and 90m), and these samples have been metagenome-sequenced at JCVI as part of the Sorcerer II Expedition 2009-2010.

These single-timepoint analyses are currently being complemented by time-series analyses of the recurring patterns in the seasonal plankton community succession in Upper and Lower Lake Constance, through SSU rRNA gene amplicon sequencing as part of our RTG-R3 – Responses to biotic and abiotic changes, Resilience and Reversibility of lake ecosystems.
