Microbiology: Isolation of microbial symbionts, cultivation of microorganisms
Molecular biology: PCR, cloning, gel electrophoresis, mutagenesis
Enzymology: hereologous expression of enzymes, functional characterisation of enzymes
Chemical Ecology: bioassays, experiments to reveal the function of secondary metabolites
