Rutger Wilschut

My research in the Ecology group focused on 'plant-soil feedbacks', the soil-mediated interactions between subsequent generations of plant individuals.

For my first line of research, I set up large greenhouse experiments, in which I examined how 1) plant life history affects the strength of plant-soil feedbacks among individuals of different plant species and 2) how the diversity of plant communities affects future plant performance in the same soil. I complemented these greenhouse experiments with root trait analyses and molecular examinations of soil communities in order to understand the drivers of plant-soil feedback variation.

My second line of research focused on global change impacts on plant-soil interactions, targeting the questions how increasing temperatures and drought alter interactions between plants and soil biota, and how these changing interactions may affect plant community composition.
